Work in a high security prison

We have been working for three years in a high security prison in Arica (north of Chile), in a center that is for people who are in rehabilitation for drugs and alcohol. This has been a very intense and beautiful experience which has now extended to other parts of the prison.

This project started because of the interest of a group of students who were studying to be flower therapists in a course that I was giving in Arica. This group included a social worker, psychologist, a nurse and a doctor. Many of the disorders treated were for issues such as insomnia, nervousness and aggression.

One woman prisoner whose son, also in prison but in the male section, had died the previous day from fatal burns. He had set himself on fire. The degree of pain and desperation of this woman was tremendous. The first flowers we gave her were Star of Bethlehem , Arnica , White Chestnut , Sweet Chestnut , Cherry Plum , Lavender , Walnut and Waratah . This formula was given every 5 minutes. She calmed down immediately.

Another interesting case was a man who was prohibited from seeing us due to his bad behavior. The authorities thought that if we worked with him, it could be seen as a reward for his bad conduct. This man had been in isolation for a week and we had to speak to the Mayor in order to be allowed to see him. The reason why we made such an effort to see and interview this person was because one therapist in our group (a psychologist) had seen an “inner light” inside him.

From a distance, we saw him leave the worst and most dangerous section of the prison escorted by two armed guards. The aura around his body was grey and I told the therapists who came with me to be careful as I was afraid something could happen. We were given a small room in which to meet with him. We brought our case of flower essences. The strangest thing was that when we entered the room, he looked alarmingly at our case. The man thought that we had come to torture him and in the case were tools used for torture. When we realized this, we made a joke about the situation, and then the aura of this man changed from grey to different colors. I then realized that the grey of his aura was showing the fear that he had felt; the fear when he had left the isolation unit and the fear when he had seen us.

However, what astounded me the most were the scars of self-inflicted cuts all over his arms. There must have been about 100 of them. When I asked why he did this to himself, he said that every time he felt anger, frustration or impotence, he would use any type of sharp object to cut himself. Some of these cuts were very deep and others more superficial; but the point is, is that he felt relief when he did this to himself, it even calmed him for a short time. Immediately, we gave him Cherry Plum , Oregon Grape , and Saguaro for little tolerance of frustration and authority. I used Cherry Plum , Dog Rose and Wild Forces together as just one flower.

    We also gave him:

Holly , Willow , and Mountain Devil for his anger and aggression

    Oregon Grape for deep hostility

Arnica and Star of Bethlehem for all past traumas

Angelica to connect him with his superior being

San Miguel of Saint Germaine for protection

This was a very special experience as in one month he made fundamental changes which allowed him to be transferred to another state where he was closer to his family.

One of the most important areas that needed to be considered within the prison were the guards who work there. They were more incarcerated than the actual prisoners in the sense that they had to spend every 15 days locked inside with the prisoners without being able to leave. We gave flowers to 77 guards (men and women) and also to the Mayor and Chief of the guards.

Our school [see next section] has put special emphasis in building a network of volunteers. In this way, the practice of social consciousness is developed and made stronger. “God gives us so much and we must give that back.”

We need to strengthen the region of solar plexus. In therapy, a great deal of love is needed in order to be able to listen to such pain and distressing stories and be able to help the patient in some way.

Flower therapy is not a medication to be taken lightly. It is a treatment in which we deepen and uncover areas of much pain. Many times these areas are like decaying corpses that we carry in our vital bodies and aura, and don’t allow us to live our full potential with freedom and love. Also, flower therapy is the medicine of today. It covers different physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects, allowing us to wake us up to our true reality.

    Where were we before flowers?

“Edward Bach” School of Flower Therapists

We are training many people to become flower essence therapists who have come to us because of what we offer in Chile. We also have classes in Argentina.

From the moment a student enters our school, the future therapist begins to take flowers as part of their own therapy. This is a fundamental part of their flower formation as it allows the student to live the experience for themselves.

In groups, students begin a special process and journey together, living and sharing moments of sadness, grief and happiness together, learning to speak of internal conflicts and traumas, their limitations and defects, but also learning to see their lives with a sense of humor. While we cover the signatures, benefits and imbalances associated with each flower, we also study the chakras and subtle bodies with which each flower works. Also, disorders which can develop on a physical level are studied, therefore preventing many illnesses.

Following the philosophy of Dr. Bach we learn to live in liberty, without prejudices, transforming the environment first with ourselves.

It is fundamental that future therapists take flower essences and live their own process. We should be coherent in our work; producing first a change from within ourselves. This is what is extraordinary about the flowers. “Charity begins at home”—this phrase illustrates how important it is that the therapist be the first to be treated.

The first level of study that we have in the school focuses on the Bach Flowers.

This course lasts approximately one-and-a-half years. During this time, the students learn to think “florally,” live their own internal processes, become conscious of their own internal crisis and solve internal emotional conflicts. They learn to see their defects and therefore have a solid base to work from and make changes. We study in-depth the differences between flowers and what they have in common. The course includes signatures, and the nucleus of each flower which includes an analysis and comparison of each flower.

After the completion of Level 1, the next level is Flowers of California which lasts one year and eight months. This allows students to broaden their internal experience and obtain deeper understanding as a flower therapist.

Also included are the different techniques for interviewing, diagnosing and treating the patient and the different areas in which the flower essences work.

What I consider to be especially important is that the different courses that we have begun throughout the country, as well as volunteer work in hospitals and elsewhere, has allowed us to grow as human beings and actively participate in making humanity more conscious and happy.

Attention deficit and hyperactivity in children

This is an area which really alarms us and as a result, we are working and dedicating a lot of time to supervision and training of therapists who work in the area of child psychology as speech therapists, teachers, child psychiatrists and neurologists who work with children.

We are seeing an increase in the use of prescribed medication whose main ingredient are amphetamines. It is alarmingly common that children are taking this type of medication. Many overly-demanding schools are putting more and more pressure on small children to do well academically. As a result, we are seeing very stressed children of ages 6 – 10, coming to consultations with severe depression. We have even seen cases of suicide due to high standards required by schools.

Society must realize and pay attention to the pressures that it is putting on children, prioritizing memory rather than creativity. Or, in other words, emphasizing development of the left side of the brain instead of giving a space for the development of the right side. A well-integrated child needs to know how to use both hemispheres.

The results we have gotten from flower therapy have been extremely revealing.

Characteristics of attention deficit in children

10 years ago, Patricia Kaminski said that 90% of children with attention deficit disorder had problems either before, during or after birth. We have proved that indeed, children who have problems with attention, have had some type of disorder during pregnancy. Some examples are:

  • mothers suffering from despair, depression, or living extreme situations—their unborn children absorb all the negative emotions while in the womb directly from the vital energy of the mother
  • many children have been born by caesarean section when there was no real need
  • children born with double umbilical cord or born prematurely or had unbalances due to excessive use of anesthesia during labor

Children born by caesarean section didn’t experience any physical effort during the birth process which, as a result, didn’t allow them to be fully in their physical bodies. This leads to these children growing up with many unbalances including not being conscious or having basic clarity of living their lives in the here and now.

The first thing we do with children of this group is to bring them back to a physical state whereby they become aware of the physical body and the here and now. We use the following formula:

    • Clematis
    • Rosemary
    • Shooting Star
    • Sundew
    • Rosita Amarillo
    Shooting Star

    For traumas-shock

    • Star of Bethlehem
    • Arnica
    • Estrella de Luz

In order to foster maturity we use

    • Chestnut Bud
    • Sage
    • Fawn Lily
    • Fairy Lantern
    • Almond
    • Sequoia

We have obtained excellent results when using these essences.

    For integration

    • Bush Fuchsia
    • Suspiro del Valle
    • Chestnut Bud
    • Rosita Amarilla
    • Madia – this is fundamental because it helps child focus and replaces amphetamine
    Madia

Many of the treatments we begin parallel with allopathic medicine as we don’t have any other choice. However, little by little, patients have been decreasing their doses of amphetamines.

    Other flowers:

  • Saguaro for “zero tolerance for frustration and authority”
  • Cerato
  • Jacaranda
  • Impatiens
  • Vervain
  • Melissa
  • The flowers work very quickly when amphetamines aren’t involved.

Our experience in cases of children with attention deficit disorder has really inspired and motivated us to continue working because the results have truly been surprising: not only in harmonizing the family environment of the child but also in giving the child greater confidence, more self-acceptance, understanding of limits and better social integration. An important part of these endeavors has been working with all members of the family, including parents and siblings.
