Expressive Arts Therapy
Sample Cases and Therapeutic Paintings

A 10-year old boy wanted to learn why he had outbursts; his mother brought him to see Donna to work on getting control of his anger and defiant behavior.

In her sessions with the child, Donna incorporated therapeutic painting therapy and clay work.

She mixed Lavender essential oil into the paints. Donna recommended Five-Flower Formula to help sooth the trauma the child had been experiencing, as the outbursts appeared to be attacks on himself and those around him. Neither the mother nor the child was comfortable with hugging, and there appeared to be an underlining resentment from the mother toward the child for "not being who she wanted him to be." Therefore, Donna next chose Holly for both of them, especially to help the child connect with his mother, as he had a need for loving bonding. Mariposa Lily was also recommended to the mother for issues in regard to the neglect she had experienced in her own childhood.

Over a year's period of time, Donna worked with the boy and his mother, gradually noticing changes. Clarity with feelings of compassion were observed in the relationship between the mother and her son. Through the child's facial features, gestures, conversation, and artwork, Donna saw subtle but significant changes in his behavior and emotional balance. She observed him to be more centered, content and he began developing self-love. The boy's destructive behavior at school changed to an attitude of "peaceful delight."

Sometimes the healing is simply about being able to use another brush when painting. This child was very tight and controlled in his movements. His mother has many issues with control and it's difficult for her to let her son go. At first the boy only wanted to paint with the very small brush. Then he gradually trusted the freer, more expansive movements of a large, generous brush. You could see the changes also in his body—more open, more expressive. These changes are also coming into his soul and into his relationship with his mother.

This painting expresses rigidity, anger, much containment, and striving for control. During early sessions with the child, one could sense his tension and anxiety. 8 months later and having used Holly flower essence, the child uses the large brush with confidence. He also stands up straighter, with more confidence and expressiveness in his body. He is not holding so many emotions inside.

A 9-year old girl with social and academic problems at school came to work with Donna. The child was also fearful of darkness, death, and the “unknown.” She felt anger towards her mother, and was preoccupied with others around her.

Donna began with therapeutic painting incorporating Lavender essential oil to work through the fear experienced by the girl. At first, the child was not able to paint on her own and constantly needed reassurance from Donna. However, after several months, she was able to paint on her own with confidence.

One at a time, Donna gave the child essences to be used at home. Impatiens was given first for one month to help bring calm to the child and relax her nervousness. She then took Mimulus for two months to address her fears. Lastly, Red Chestnut was recommended for her obsessive worrying.

Donna observed gradual changes and unfolding layers of resistance and fear. The child's behaviors improved at school and at home.

This first painting depicts the darkness, fear and stagnation residing in the child's soul. The soul is the space between the body and the spirit; the rainbow here is that soul expression. The "circle of the soul" shines on paper; it is the Self expressing its own holy essence. It's as though the child was saying,“my soul has created its own sphere.”

A boy, age 9, who had experienced physical abuse in an angry and violent family, felt chaotic, frustrated and angry himself. He painted this picture which he described as “pirates killing each other.” One can see the anger and tension in the painting.

Five-Flower Formula was necessary for this child as the beginning remedy as his need for calming and internal cohesion was very great.

His mother needed Star of Bethlehem to heal emotional trauma and to begin to find wholeness within herself.

These next paintings begin to show the harmony and joy that began to emerge in his soul.
