Madia flower essence helps us focus on what is central and essential in life, and ignore the incessant pull of distracting influences that swirl around us. In its diurnal cycle of closing in the light and heat of the day the Madia flower models this ability to focus and concentrate. As well, its aromatic oils concentrate the fiery forces of the surroundings to hold moisture within. Some years ago I wrote an article on how we study plant gestures, using Madia as an example. Please enjoy it here.
This summer, with an abundant bloom of Madia plants in our Terra Flora Gardens, I recorded a video (below) describing the Madia plant and its healing gesture.
Comparing Madia with Similar Flower Essences
We can distinguish Madia from several other flower essences that also work with issues of mental clarity.
Rabbitbrush
grows in the wide-open spaces of the eastern Sierras and Great Basin desert. It is a member of the Asteraceae plant family, yet the flowers are very compact, with only the central tubular florets, and no ray florets.
Like Madia, Rabbitbrush works with the polarity of expansion and contraction. Yet, unlike Madia, Rabbitbrush does not close into itself, but rather it maintains its centeredness within the vast expanses of its environment. It reminds me of animals (such as the rabbit) who maintain a high level of alertness of everything that is happening in the extended periphery of their environment. Rabbitbrush flower essence embodies that quality of clear mental alertness that extends to one’s surroundings.
Cosmos
is a full Asteraceae flower with yellow central disk florets arranged daisy-like in Fibonacci spirals, and beautiful magenta p
etal-like ray florets. It grows quickly from seed to flower, spreading rapidly in garden or in the wild, with light, feathery leaves. Everything about the plant speaks of movement and airy agility, combined with organization and coherence. The Cosmos essence embodies these mercurial mental faculties of intelligence and organization, particularly in the
ability to translate thought into speech.
Indian Pink
is not an Asteraceae, but rather a member of the Caryophyllaceae, the Pink or Carnation Family. Many of these flowers, and especially the Indian Pink, have a long tubular calyx, which then opens into the flaring petals, forming the corolla. Again, there is the polarity of center and periphery. With Indian Pink it is about creating an inner s
pace, and quiet interior that is represented in the hollow tube of the calyx. The exterior movement is represented by the flaring brilliant red petals, which create a feeling of swirling movement. The Indian Pink essence helps us maintain a quiet center when the world of frenetic activity swirls around us.
So now let’s look at how these three flower essences compare with Madia in their uses.
Madia – Use when the mind is distracted, unable to focus, moving from one thing to the next unproductively. It helps us to ignore distractions and focus on what is essential. An example of its use would be a student preparing for exams and distracted by social media. Madia flower essence is available here
Indian Pink – Use when we feel overwhelmed by the activity around us, or by trying to do too much, too quickly. It helps us hold awareness of a still center while the world swirls around us. An example of its use would be someone feeling disoriented while trying to navigate a busy airport. Indian Pink flower essence is available here
Rabbitbrush – Use when we are challenged to combine precise attention to detail, with a wide-ranging awareness of our environment. An example of its use would be someone managing a busy office. Rabbitbrush flower essence is available here
Cosmos – Use when we feel mentally confused or inarticulate, at a loss for words. Cosmos helps us to think on our feet and speak fluently and with clear articulation of ideas. An example of its use would be by a foreign language interpreter. Cosmos flower essence is available here
