Gaining self-esteem and the ability to be more at home in the world;
Basic insights about some frequently used essences
Anne Marie Nistad Furebø is a practitioner in Norway who utilizes the healing combination of Thought Field Therapy (TFT), coaching and flower essences to effectively treat her clients. She received training in the use of Bach remedies with a practitioner/instructor in western Norway, and later educated as a Bach therapist (BFRP) at the Bach Centre in England. Subsequently, she expanded the range of flower essences that she uses in her practice. There is some noted prevalence of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in Norway, primarily the use of acupuncture, homeopathy, reflexology, natural medicine and chiropractic. 1, 2 However, flower essences are not very well-known by people in Norway, though Dr. Audun Myskja , a medical doctor with decades of experience in the field of integrated medicine , has worked towards educating others about them. Also, as noted earlier, there are instructors representing the Bach Centre in England who educate Bach therapists in Norway.
Anne Marie says, “People typically contact me initially for TFT.” TFT was developed by an American practitioner, the late Dr. Roger Callahan, who was familiar with acupuncture and learned to balance the body’s energy system via points on the meridians, thereby promoting natural health and emotional healing.
Mats Uldal and MUIS also added NLP coaching and other relevant methods, as a technique for the questions that are asked, to help a client be fully in contact with the trauma or whatever it is with which they are concerned. When in contact with the situation or feeling, TFT can relieve the pressure and be in contact with the recourse. It is very good for stress and also for trauma.
“By way of explanation, I try to make the use of flower essences sound as natural and easy as possible. I say that it’s old knowledge that has been forgotten by many; it is that nature provides us with all that we need to take care of for mental or emotional health. I explain that it is a bit similar to homeopathics, but that it is much safer because one cannot do any harm with them. The other difference is that flower essences provide positive energy if one is in a negative condition.” “I talk about how safe and easy they are to use, the benefits, and how easy it is to get help with them. Most clients accept them and receive great benefits.” “The combination of releasing stress and trauma, then refueling the person with flower remedies is really tremendous.” Anne Marie first works doing TFT, thereby initially treating the tension and some of the trauma is addressed as well. Then, flower essences are used for their calming effect or to refill them with energy. Often, Olive is given for energy, and Centaury , Arnica, Star of Bethlehem , Rock Rose, Crab Apple, Willow, Mimulus and Larch , to help relieve the trauma or abuses. As Anne Marie and her clients talk, if there is an indication, she gives a flower essence right in the moment under the tongue. Sometimes, she will use flower essences in crème on acupuncture points and also show the clients during a treatment some acupressure points for self-healing, just enough to create a calming effect. However, most commonly she does either coaching, TFT, or a combination of the two and then prepares a dosage treatment bottle that is used by the client for two or three weeks. Gaining self-esteem and the ability to be more at home in the world; a case narrative by Anne Marie
His self-confidence was extremely low; he actually had had a difficult time all of his life. Doctors had a theory that when his mother was pregnant, perhaps she had had some type of virus that affected him. He never got the help or attention that he should have to really find out about his condition. He had learning difficulties and had difficulty finding words when he was talking. Information had to be given to him very slowly for him to deal with it. He didn’t receive the help he needed, such as extra help at school, etc. He compared himself with his classmates and because of that, his self-esteem was lower and became even lower. He didn’t feel he was worth anything. When he first came to see me, I wasn’t completely prepared based on the information I had heard about him. He was a thin, very shy boy and he was bending his head down and to one side, as a result of trying to hide. He had been doing this for so long that he was stuck in that position. I started with TFT because it is good for tension and I worked to get the muscles more relaxed, and little by little get him to raise his head. First it rose into the middle and then up. He was not able at all to look anyone in the eyes, not even his mother or father, no one. He didn’t even sit with his family to eat dinner or do anything with them; that was how bad it had become. With the first treatment he became better and I gave him a formula of Larch , Mimulus and Walnut . He came back two weeks later. His educational situation was such that it was not just theoretical, but he had some practicum working in a company where they took more care with him, because they worked with special needs children. The grandmother met the employer there one week after the treatment and he said, “What happened with him? He’s so different! Now he does things on his own and also, he came and sat with us while we were having lunch. He has never done that before. What’s going on?” They didn’t explain to the employer, so he didn’t know that he had started the treatment. Little by little we worked together and I got more information. It was such a tragic situation at school; he was by himself all the time. He would sit in a separate room, hiding in the wardrobe when having lunch and he couldn’t face being with anyone. That was important for the parents to hear; they contacted the school, they became more aware, and he got the extra help and support that he needed at school. Then, we started with Trumpet Vine for his speaking ability. It was just fantastic. It became easier for him to find the words. When we all started this process, they had also contacted the doctor and a therapist at the hospital who worked with special needs children. They decided to do some testing of his mental skills. They could see that there was a permanent reduction in his mental psychological skills. They also said it could have been caused by something when his mother was pregnant.
They repeated the test several times and noticed that on one scale, the results regarding communication were much better. They had not seen that before. He had used the remedy for several months and we had noticed the difference with him, but the test results confirmed our experience and how we saw him. We changed the formula at times, such as including Gentian, Willow, Larch , Mimulus and Crab Apple , but Trumpet Vine was in it all of the time. From not being able to go to school alone, or sit with family at mealtimes, one year after, he started at a residential school and he began with photography and drama while there. He was able to live there alone and a couple of months later, the students also went on a trip to New York. Prior to treatment, he couldn’t even buy a ticket alone to take the bus to school, and then after some months of treatment, he was able to travel to New York. Little by little, he lifted his head up but it was still very difficult to make eye contact, though he improved greatly. He started to do things on his own. He kept using the dosage bottles on his own. He now lives alone in an apartment and is able to take care of himself with some practical, social and financial support because of the complex situation.
Case synopsis: Gaining peace from the past, autonomy and health
During an intense period of 1½ years, the client came to the private clinic where Anne Marie worked to receive consultations and therapy. The first 10 months she was seen 2-4 times a month. During the last 8 months, her appointments were less frequent. The first consultation consisted of TFT and coaching. Flower essences were added later and the effects were seen after 2 weeks. Flower essences utilized were:

Lavender, Olive, White Chestnut, Rescue Remedy (Five-Flower Formula) , at night – for insomnia, fatigue The essences were prepared in dosage bottles and taken a minimum of 4 times a day. Rescue Remedy (Five-Flower Formula) was used when needed.
The essences were used in combination with other therapies including, coaching, TFT / thought field therapy MUIS, Deep PEAT method , sound, and free/intuitive dance and movement therapy. The effects and results were more than expected. The client was much more confident, found peace with her past, stepped out of destructive relationships, gained some weight and felt okay with it. She had less need of controlling everything, including moneywise and was able buy things for herself. She began to sleep better and had more energy. Prior to these therapies, she hadn’t understood that it was a choice to love and take good care of herself. After one year in therapy, the client had new consultations in the traditional health care system and they couldn't believe the changes. After the consultations and group therapy, in reality, most of the diagnoses were no longer obvious or relevant anymore.
